Sawantwadi railway station on the Konkan Railway
Sawantwadi railway station, officially Sawantwadi Road (code SWV), is on the Konkan Railway in Niravade village, Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. It serves Sawantwadi town, about 6 km away, and lies 363.88 km down the line from Roha, in the Ratnagiri division. It opened in 1998 as the Konkan route was completed in phases.
A terminus still in the making
On 27 June 2015, then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone to turn Sawantwadi Road into a full terminus, with stabling lines, terminal platforms and wash lines, so trains could start in southern Maharashtra rather than run on to Madgaon. Progress has been slow because of Konkan Railway's limited funds, a stalled water supply plan from the Tilari Dam and incomplete platform roofing.
Renaming proposal
In May 2026 the Maharashtra Cabinet approved renaming the station Lokmanya Madhu Dandavate Railway Terminus, after the former Railway Minister credited with sanctioning the line's early phases. The change still needs central approval.
Trains in 2026
The Rajdhani and Garib Rath lost their halts here during COVID-19. On 24 July 2026 the Railways announced experimental stops for three pairs of trains: the daily CSMT–Mangaluru Junction Superfast (12133/12134), the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Central Express (12431/12432) and the LTT–Thiruvananthapuram North Garib Rath (12201/12202). On 1 August 2026 a new daily express between CSMT and Sawantwadi Road was approved.
