Headquarters of the Solapur division
Solapur railway station (code SUR) is the main station of Solapur, the textile city of southern Maharashtra, and the headquarters of Central Railway's Solapur division. More than 120,000 passengers a day use it. It is graded NSG-2, was rated A-1 among India's 500 main stations, and has been called one of the most beautiful railway stations in India.
On the line since 1860
The Great Indian Peninsula Railway pushed its line across the Deccan towards Madras in the mid-19th century, and in 1860 it opened the sections from Barshi Road to Mohol and from Mohol to Solapur. That makes Solapur one of the older stations on today's Mumbai–Chennai route.
