Airoli station, where Navi Mumbai begins
Airoli station (code AIRL) is a suburban station on the Trans-Harbour line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, run by the Central Railway. It is the first stop after Thane on the Thane–Turbhe–Vashi/Nerul/Panvel route, 5.79 km away and roughly an 8-minute ride. For many commuters it marks the crossover point between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Location
The station stands in Sector 3 of the Airoli node, right beside the Thane–Belapur road. It was planned for two kinds of passengers: workers heading to the Thane–Belapur industrial zone on the east side, and residents of Airoli's housing and commercial areas on the west side. Two commuter subways and one subway for light vehicles connect the two sides.
Platforms
- Platform 1: trains from Thane towards Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Panvel.
- Platform 2: trains from Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Panvel towards Thane.
Both platforms were built about 210 metres long, with an extension of around 60 metres planned for longer rakes.
Using Airoli station
Trans-Harbour locals run frequently in both directions, so most people simply turn up and board. The quickest way into central Mumbai is usually to ride to Thane and change to a Central line local towards CSMT. Heading to Navi Mumbai's business districts, stay on the train through Turbhe to Vashi or Nerul. Avoid the peak-hour crush if you are carrying luggage.
