Ajni railway station, Nagpur's second terminal
Ajni railway station (code AJNI) is on Humpyard Road in the Ajni area of Nagpur, about 2.8 km from Nagpur Junction on the Delhi–Chennai line. It is run by the Central Railway's Nagpur division. Until the mid-to-late 1990s its code was AQ.
Who uses Ajni
Many through trains stop at Ajni for about two minutes, and it is popular with people living in central, western and southern Nagpur, as well as short-distance daily travellers. Trains terminating at Nagpur often empty by around 80% at Ajni, and departing trains fill up by about 40% here. Ajni is one of five smaller stations within Nagpur's extended city limits, along with Itwari, Kalamna, Kamptee and Khapri. One curiosity: the run between Nagpur and Ajni is among Indian Railways' shortest scheduled train journeys.

Becoming a satellite terminal
Ajni has had 3 platforms. A ₹45.33 crore project is turning it into a satellite terminal for Nagpur, adding 4 new platforms long enough for 26-coach trains, four stabling lines, a pit line for train examination, two new foot overbridges, a 500-metre cover shed and coach-watering facilities. Trains towards Balharshah and Badnera are expected to start or end here once the work is complete.
The Ajni loco shed
Ajni is also home to a large Electric Loco Shed holding more than 260 locomotives, including WAP-7, WAG-7, WAG-9 and WAG-12 engines.
