Chembur railway station on the Harbour line
Chembur railway station (code CMBR) is a stop on the Harbour line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, run by the Central Railway. It sits close to Chembur Market in eastern Mumbai, between Tilak Nagar and Govandi. A skywalk connects it with the Chembur monorail station, and there is an out-of-system interchange with Chembur on the Mumbai Metro Yellow Line.
A line built for garbage trains
- 1906: a single line from Kurla to Chembur is built to carry the city's garbage trains.
- 1924: the line opens to passenger traffic.
- 1950: the Kurla–Mankhurd section, including Chembur, is electrified.
- 1951: suburban steam services run on one track.
Few busy Mumbai stations have such an unusual origin: the route that now carries crowded Harbour line locals started life for waste disposal.
Platforms and access
Chembur has 2 platforms, one for northbound and one for southbound trains, on two tracks. One train starts from Chembur each morning; the rest run through towards Mankhurd and Panvel in one direction and towards CSMT in the other. The station can be reached by road from both the east and west sides. There is no parking or cycle parking, so plan to arrive by bus, auto or on foot.
Accessibility
The station has noise indicators to help blind passengers find where their compartment will stop. However, it does not have a ramp for disabled passengers, which can make it difficult for wheelchair users. A first-aid box is kept in the station master's office.
