DEE station: Delhi Sarai Rohilla explained
DEE station is the code for Delhi Sarai Rohilla, a terminus about 4 km from Delhi Junction, managed by the Delhi division of the Northern Railway. More than 20 trains originate here, including Duronto and AC trains, linking Delhi with Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Where the name comes from
A sarai is an inn for travellers. The station is named after a village that grew around a sarai built by Ruhullah Khan, a Mughal nobleman and son of Khalil Ullah Khan, governor of Delhi under Shah Jahan. It stood on the busy road from Delhi to Ajmer. Over time "Ruhullah" became "Rohilla".
History of Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station
- 1872: the station is set up as the metre-gauge line to Jaipur and Ajmer is built, just outside Shahjahanabad's walls.
- 1991: broad-gauge conversion begins.
- December 1994: one Delhi–Rewari track is converted; metre-gauge trains then end at Sarai Rohilla, making it a terminus.
- 2006–07: the second Rewari track is converted, ending metre-gauge operations.
