Karjat railway station, at the foot of the Bhor Ghat
Karjat railway station (code KJT on the Central Railway, shown as S on Mumbai Suburban Railway boards) is in Raigad district, Maharashtra. It is a major terminus of the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway and the last stop on the plains before the main line climbs the Bhor Ghat towards Lonavala and Pune.
Three ways out of Karjat
Banker engines and the ghat climb
Above Karjat the line rises steeply through the Western Ghats to Lonavala. Heavy passenger and goods trains get help here: banker locomotives couple on at the rear at Karjat and push trains up the incline. That is why long-distance trains towards Pune usually make a technical stop at Karjat even when they skip other suburban stations. The ghat section is one of Maharashtra's most scenic stretches of railway, especially in the monsoon.
Station facts
The station sits about 52 metres above sea level and, according to its Wikipedia infobox, has been open since 1 April 1863. It is in the Mumbai division of the Central Railway.
