Kharghar railway station, Navi Mumbai's park-and-ride stop
Kharghar railway station (code KHAG) is the fourth station from Panvel on the Harbour line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, run by the Central Railway. Harbour line locals run between Panvel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and the ride from CSMT to Kharghar takes about 65 minutes.
A station with a car park on its roof
Kharghar's design is unusual: its roof doubles as a full car park. Designed to get more value out of the original brief, it takes upwards of 1,000 vehicles a day and works as a park-and-ride facility for commuters. The station complex covers about 200,000 sq ft, and the raised parking deck gives the building its distinctive profile.
Platforms
- Platform 1: trains towards Panvel.
- Platform 2: trains towards Thane, Goregaon and CSMT.
- Platforms 3 and 4: used for stabling (parking) trains.
Harbour line services also connect with the Western line via Wadala Road, and trains towards Thane use the Trans-Harbour route.
Metro and bus connections
A dedicated flyover links Kharghar station with Belpada metro station on the Navi Mumbai Metro, making it easy to switch between suburban trains and the metro for travel within Kharghar and neighbouring nodes. Buses run from the station to Taloja Phase 2, Kharghar Valley Shilp and Taloja RAF.
Tips for commuters
If you drive to the station, the rooftop park-and-ride is the simplest option; arrive early on weekdays, when it is busiest. For long-distance trains heading south along the Konkan or to Kerala, Panvel is just four stops away.
